Ground plan of Wood Walton Moat
South-east of the village is a large triangular enclosure with an entrance in the south-west side. The length of the sides, within the moat, is 630 ft., 530 ft. and 430 ft., respectively. At the north corner are indications of an inner enclosure about 39 ft. by 73 ft., but its moats are in places difficult to follow.
Towards the south-west is another inner moat resembling a crescent in shape, but probably a part of a circular moat, now only about 2 ft. 6 in. deep. In the extreme west corner is a mound like a tumulus, about 38 ft. diameter at its base and 4 ft. 6 in. high, with slight indications of a ditch, especially on the north-east side.
